Health and Safety

Our safety performance is world class, with an Injury Frequency Rate (IFR) of 0.1.

The National Grid Safety, Health, Environment and Security Management System (SMS) is based upon the HSE guidance ‘Successful health and safety management (HSG65)’ and describes a structured approach to the management of safety, where people (including contractors), work together to achieve defined aims, through the company’s processes without causing harm to themselves or others and with minimum impact on the environment.

Our umbrella document NGUK/SHE/100 ‘National Grid Safety, Health, Environment and Security (SHES) Management Framework’  sets out what is required and the boundaries within which the requirement must be met, leaving the how to do it to the responsible person or business where sensible. In line with the company goal that delivery of SHES is a line management responsibility,  requirements are devolved to Business Units where possible and more prescriptive detail may be contained in Business Unit documents.

Periodic checking of business procedures and application thereof are the responsibility of corporate audit, specifically the SHES corporate audit function. While this organisation is not an independent 3rd party it is a separate function from the SSR Directorate.
